Beyonce: Life Is But a Dream was directed and produced by Beyonce herself and premiered in the US on cable TV network HBO on 16 February.

First-person footage

The film, according to Nu Metros is "a fusion of video that provides raw, unprecedented access to the private entertainment icon and her high voltage performances. Along with electrifying footage of Beyonce onstage, this unique special looks beyond the glamour to reveal a vibrant, vulnerable and unforgettable woman."

The documentary includes extensive first-person footage, some of it shot by Beyonce on her own laptop, in which she reflects on her life as a celebrity, the refuge she finds on stage and the joy of becoming a mother to daughter Blue Ivy in January last year.

The film sheds light on her childhood in Houston, with home movies revealing her family life, and personal testimonies from Beyonce herself as she reflects on her struggles to stay grounded in a world in which her success and image is so celebrated.

The film also features appearances from her husband Jay-Z, her mother Tina Knowles, sister Solange and Destiny's Child bandmate and childhood friend Kelly Rowland.
