Actress Nomsa Buthelezi has bagged a lead role in an upcoming movie called The Adventures of Supermama. The movie is about a stubborn and heroic Doris Ratabane, an ordinary family woman from Johannesburg with a dangerous passion for fighting crime. by Phakamani Mvelashe
According to a statement by the producers of the show, the show is based in rural KwaZulu Natal.
"Doris used to receive gifts from her father who worked as a police officer in Joburg. This one time he gave her a comic book and she treasured it. And as she was inspired by her father's brave efforts in making the world a safer place, so too she wanted to fight for justice."
Featuring alongside Nomsa is the accomplished and much-loved comedian Desmond Dube and the impressive Michael Mabizela, who plays Doris's husband Jabulani.
The producers of the movie describe Desmond's character as the awkward Police Commissioner. He is unhealthily obsessed with himself, but still foolishly loveable.
"Quite often he doesn't make much sense, particularly in interviews in which complicated crime stats need to be contextualised," they say.
His relationship with Supermama is a complicated one, as he seems to appreciate her attempt to fight crime but gets annoyed when she gets it right and ends up completely stealing the limelight from him.
Other well-known actors featuring in the movie are Dambuza Mdledle from Ses' Top La and Siyabonga Mtshali from Rhythm City.
"It has been the culmination of many years of hard work. It was great fun making this film and it is fantastic that Supermama can finally have a life of her own and get out there into the world," says Director Karen van Schalkwyk.
