Production Manager at Film School Johannesburg

The Film and Television Department of the School of Arts is looking to appoint a Production Manager to support the student production processes and facilitate productions as a service to the university community. A self-motivated and committed team player able to contribute to the development of an efficient production infrastructure and able to function effectively within the departmental community.

Pro-actively creating new systems and updating older systems to streamline processes within the department. The post also requires the development, promotion and management of online short courses.

This is a 100% permanent position and the successful applicant should be available to start in January 2019.

The post has TWO main areas of focus:

1. Developing and maintaining ongoing revenue streams for the Film & Television Department through Productions and Online Short Courses

* Preparation and managing of production budgets, including management of rate card
* Preproduction coordination: arranging required crew, equipment and other production logistics
* Overseeing production and postproduction.
* Receive and process ad hoc staff and extracurricular student applications for equipment usage
* Meeting potential clients within the university and advising same regarding production options
* Preparation and managing of production budgets, including management of rate card
* Overseeing preproduction, production and postproduction
* Developing and managing a regular offering of market-oriented Online & Short Courses with relevant course coordinators
* Marketing these paid short courses to the public and the rest of the university
* Managing the resources for courses (staffing, facilities, course admin etc.)
* Ensuring students receive certification

2. Managing/Coordinating Student Productions

* Working with tech team, secretary of Production Committee
* Issuing of production sheets (i.e. to allocate equipment appropriately to concept briefs for all student exercises and productions) and work with booking system
* Coordinate and archive student production documentation (release forms, location forms etc.)
* Point-of-contact for student and commercial film production archiving
* Allocate and balance shooting periods for all courses, along with technical team
* Occasionally teach basic elements of production management
* Manage student bookings of studio spaces, wardrobe and props

Other responsibilities also include coordinating the annual student film awards, international exchanges, workshops, conferences and oversee the organization of field trips and student tutors.

Qualifications and Experience required:

A degree qualification, preferably in a relevant field.
Minimum 5 years industry experience as a Production Coordinator/Manager or equivalent in the film and television industry (or possibly in an educational institution specializing in film production). Essential requirements: experience in managing film productions, with thorough understanding of film equipment and production/postproduction processes.

Be able to start by January 2019
